Carbon footprint

Carbon neutral operations

Our goal is to become carbon neutral in our own operations by 2025. We monitor the target by means of two metrics:

  • Share of renewable energy in own production and locations.
  • CO₂ emissions / ton of clothing produced.

By our operations we mean our Finnish operations as well as our production in Estonia. We will achieve this goal by measures such as transferring to the use of renewable energy in our production and facilities, and by minimizing emissions from transportation and mobility. Furthermore, we compensate for those emissions that we cannot avoid.

Use of renewable energy

The electricity we use in Finland comes from renewable sources, except for electricity for three stores. In our company cars, we have partially switched to an electric fleet; three of our four company cars are fully electric, and one is a hybrid. In Estonia, we switched to green energy for electricity consumption in Narva in 2023. In Viljandi, electricity is partly produced with renewable energy and partly with non-renewable energy. In Tampere, district heat production will also become emission-free in the next few years, which will contribute to reducing our emissions.

Result in 2023: The share of renewable energy in own production and sites was 95.9%.

Carbon dioxide emissions per
produced ton of clothing

We did our first emissions calculation in 2020, when only Scope 1 and 2 emissions were included. We calculated Scope 3 emissions for the first time in 2021, which is why the calculation for that year is used as the base year. As the calculation has become significantly more accurate this year, we will use 2023 as the base year for our carbon footprint calculation from now on.

The main reasons for the increase in emissions are the revised emissions calculations for 2022-2023 [Scope 3 also includes emissions from the manufacture of fibres for purchased products (previously only for manufactured products) and emissions from all transport companies]

Result 2023: 42.93 kg CO₂-eq / ton of clothing produced

Description of carbon footprint calculation and results

Scope 1 emissions

We included the emissions from refuelling one leased car. This data was not included in the 2022 calculation.

Scope 2 emissions

Includes all operations in Finland except for Lahti, Seinäjoki and Turku stores, where we do not contract electricity ourselves, and Narva and Viljandi electricity and district heating in Estonia.

Scope 3 emissions

Yarns, fabrics and knits: the 2023 calculation includes the carbon footprint of the fabrics and knits we use, calculated through the fibre content of the fabrics and knits. We have included all fabric metres used during 2023, dividing them by the percentage of fibre by composition and converting the metres to kilograms by the running metric weight of the fabric.

Purchased products: for the first time, the 2023 calculation includes the fibres used in the products we buy. We have calculated the amount of fibre used in kilograms based on the weight of the product, using percentages according to the composition of the product. The calculation is distorted by the fact that the weight of the product naturally includes the accessories (e.g. zips, buttons and fasteners). We have compiled the total fibre usage using the following fibres: acrylic, elastane, recycled polyester, Lyocell, polyamide, polyester, cotton, recycled cotton, wool and viscose. These fibres account for 94% of the fibres we use.

Packaging materials: we count the kilos of cardboard, plastic and wooden packaging (pallets) we use.

Transport to the factory or warehouse: The calculation includes ship, train, air and road freight to and from factories/subcontracting and transport to customers. The data of two transport companies missing in previous years have been added to the calculation. The main reason for the increase in emissions is that we shipped large quantities of products to the Netherlands for recycling. These shipments were previously not included in the calculation.

Waste transport and treatment: We have used the carbon footprint figure from the supplier. The figure includes Tampere and the following stores: Joensuu, Rovaniemi and Tuusula. The amount of mixed waste from Narva has been entered into the calculator. No data was received for Viljandi.

Business travel: includes passenger-kilometres by car, boat, plane, train, taxi and bus and hotel nights.

Result 2021: 4,122.86 t CO₂-ecv

Result 2022: 7,089.67 t CO₂-ecv

Result 2021: 10,732.67 t CO₂-ecv
